UNDERSTANDING LOG SCALES
What Is a Log Scale?
A log scale is a way of estimating how many board feet of lumber an be produced from a log based mainly on its diameter and length. Different log rules make different allowances for saw kerf, taper and waste, so the estimated board foot volume can vary depending on which scale is used.
Developed around 1825, the Doyle Log Scale is widely used in the southern United States. It tends to underestimate scale logs and overestimate large logs and it allows for a 5/16″ saw kerf.
Developed around 1846, the Scribner Log Scale is a diagram based rule. It does not account for taper and typically underestimates logs, especially as log length increases.
Developed in 1906, the International 1/4 Inch Scale accounts for saw kerf, taper, shrinkage, and waste. It is generally the most consistent and is often used as a basis of comparison.
