If your blade starts drifting or wandering in the cut, check the blade tension, guides, and tooth set. Uneven or worn tooth set can cause the blade to pull to one side. If everything on the mill is adjusted correctly and the blade still wanders, it may be time to have the blade sharpened and set.

Rough or uneven lumber can be caused by dull teeth, improper blade tension, buildup on the blade, or inconsistent tooth set. Start by checking the blade for dirt or pitch and make sure your mill is properly adjusted. If the blade is clean and correctly tensioned but still leaves a rough cut, sharpening and setting may be needed.

Wavy cuts can happen when a blade is dull, improperly tensioned, cutting too fast, or has an inconsistent tooth set. Dense or difficult logs can also contribute. Slow your feed rate and check your mill setup first. If the problem continues, inspect the blade for dull or damaged teeth and uneven set.

Blades can dull quickly when cutting dirty or muddy logs, hitting bark with embedded grit, cutting very hard wood, or running with improper tension or feed speed. Keeping logs and blades as clean as possible can help extend blade life. Resharpening before a blade becomes extremely dull can also help prevent unnecessary wear.

The tooth set controls the width of the kerf and helps the blade move smoothly through the wood. Teeth that are set unevenly can cause wandering, rough cuts, increased resistance, and poor blade performance. Proper setting should be checked each time the blade is sharpened—which is why we include sharpening and setting together with every standard blade service.
