⎯⎯⎯ HOW LOG VOLUME IS CALCULATED ⎯⎯⎯
Log volume, also called board feet, is an estimate of how much lumber can be cut from a log.
Different log rules use different formulas and assumptions, which can give different results.
DOYLE LOG RULE
The Doyle rule is a simple formula that tends to give the highest board foot estimates. It was developed in the 19th century and does not account for taper or saw kerf.

SCRIBNER LOG RULE
The Scribner rule is a long-time industry standard. It uses a table-based method that accounts for log diameter, length, and taper. It usually gives a lower estimate than Doyle.

INTERNATIONAL 1/4" RULE
The International 1/4" rule accounts for taper and a 1/4-inch saw kerf. It typically gives the most conservative (board foot) estimate and is commonly used in many regions today.

GOOD
TO KNOW

MEASURE INSIDE BARK
Use the small-end diameter inside the bark for the most accurate estimate.

LOG SHAPE MATTERS
These are estimates. Actual lumber yield can vary based on taper, curve, and log quality.

DIFFERENT RULES=DIFFERENT RESULTS
Doyle usually gives the highest estimate, Scribner is moderate, & International 1/4" is the most conservative.

TURN LOGS INTO LUMBER
When it's time to saw, keep your blades in top shape for the best results.

KEEP IT SHARP.
KEEP IT CUTTING.
Sharp, properly set blades give you the best lumber yield from every log. Let us keep your blades in top condition.
