How to Safely Fold and Unfold a Bandsaw Mill Blade (Step-by-Step)
If you’re mailing your bandsaw blades in for sharpening, folding them properly is a must. Not only does it make the blade easier to ship, but it also keeps you (and everyone else) safe in the process. Here’s a clear guide on how to fold and unfold your bandsaw blade the right way—whether you’re a new sawyer or a seasoned mill operator.

🔁 How to Fold a Bandsaw Blade
Before you begin:
🧤 Wear gloves — Bandsaw blades are sharp even when dull, and handling them bare-handed can lead to serious cuts.
✅ Step-by-Step Folding Instructions:
- Stand Up Straight with Room to Move
Find a clear space with enough room for the blade to coil safely. Hold the blade in front of you with the teeth facing away. - Hold the Blade with Both Hands
Position your hands about shoulder-width apart on the blade loop. - Tilt the Blade Toward the Ground
Tilt the top of the blade down and slightly toward your body, so the blade forms a large loop in front of you. - Begin the Twist
While tilting, rotate your wrists inward. With some gentle downward pressure and a little twist, the blade will naturally start to form three smaller loops. - Let the Blade Coil into Three Loops
Once the loops form, guide them into place. The blade should now be coiled neatly into a tight circle—ready for tying. - Secure the Blade
Use zip ties, blade bands, or twist ties to keep the loops in place. Never use duct tape or anything sticky.
🔓 How to Unfold a Bandsaw Blade
Unfolding a blade can be dangerous if not done carefully. Always do this outdoors or in an open area with no one standing nearby.
✅ Step-by-Step Unfolding Instructions:
- Wear Gloves and Safety Glasses
The blade may spring open quickly, and safety gear helps avoid injury. - Lay the Blade Flat
Place the coiled blade on a flat surface, holding it securely with one hand. - Cut the Zip Tie Carefully
Cut the tie while firmly holding the loops in place. - Let the Blade Uncoil Slowly
Gently allow each loop to fall open—do not force or throw it. The blade should settle into a single large circle. - Inspect the Blade
Before using or sending it off for sharpening, inspect the blade for any cracks, missing teeth, or rust.
