How to Use the Doyle Log Scale Chart
Measure the diameter of the log at the small end, inside the bark. Then find that diameter on the chart and follow across to the column for the log’s length. The number where they meet is the estimated board-foot volume for that log.
Log scale charts provide an estimate, not an exact lumber yield. Actual board-foot recovery can vary based on log shaper, taper, defects, kerf, and how the log is sawn.

The Doyle Log Rule estimates board feet using the formula: BF = ((D − 4)² × L) ÷ 16
This formula provides an estimate of board feet and may not match actual lumber recovery due to taper, defects, kerf, and sawing method.
